Second Year Advising
Make an Appointment with Academic Advisor
You've made it through your first year, and are likely beginning your sophomore year with a better understanding of yourself and the many possibilities open to you!
Sophomore year is a time to further clarify both your goals and your plans, and to ensure that you are developing an academic plan that reflects your aspirations, career goals, and individuality.
The steps you are advised to take:
  • REVIEW YOUR FIRST-YEAR PROGRESS
Reflect on your first-year courses, grades, and overall academic experience. Identify any strengths and weaknesses, and consider how you can build upon them in your second year.
  • UNDERSTAND DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
Familiarize yourself with the specific requirements for your major or program. Ensure you're aware of any prerequisites or core courses you need to complete. This will help you plan your second-year courses accordingly.
  • CONSIDER YOUR ACADEMIC GOALS
Think about your long-term academic and career goals. Are there specific courses, minors, or electives that align with your interests or future plans? Discuss your aspirations with your academic advisor, who can help you choose courses that support your goals.
  • BALANCE YOUR COURSE LOAD
Strive for a balance between challenging and manageable courses. Consider your strengths, workload from other commitments (e.g., part-time job, extracurricular activities), and the amount of time and effort each course requires. Your advisor can assist in creating a well-rounded schedule.
  • SEEK EXTRACURRICULAR INVOLVEMENT
Second year is an excellent time to get involved in extracurricular activities related to your academic interests. Joining clubs, organizations, or research opportunities can enhance your learning experience, build connections, and develop valuable skills.
  • CONSIDER ACADEMIC MOBILITY AND INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
If your institution offers study abroad or internship opportunities, explore the possibilities for your second or third year. These experiences can broaden your horizons, expose you to new cultures, and provide unique academic opportunities.
  • ADDRESS ANY CONCERNS OR CHALLENGES
If you encountered academic difficulties or challenges in your first year, now is the time to seek support. Talk to your academic advisor about any concerns you have, whether it's regarding time management, study strategies, or specific subject areas. They can offer advice or direct you to appropriate resources.
Advising sessions
Remember, academic advising is meant to be a collaborative process. Your advisor is there to assist you in making informed decisions, setting goals, and navigating your academic journey successfully. Make sure to communicate your needs, ask questions, and seek guidance throughout your second year and beyond.
